Music

One story of how my listening changed: thirteen years of Spotify, the recent months from Last.fm, and Apple Music when its export arrives. Pick a source above, or read them together. The counts stay next to the names on purpose, so a tie reads as a tie.

Source

Spotify and Last.fm today; Apple Music joins when its export arrives.

Chapter 1

How much, and when

Thirteen years in one picture: the climb, the shared account, the quiet after 2022, and what is still to be filled in.

The whole record

Spotify kept 90,112 plays, 4,284 hours: about 178 days of music, from 5,849 artists. Last.fm has the months since.

After February 2024 (grey), Spotify logged 272 plays in 31 months. Last.fm counts what plays on my Mac from August 2026; the two overlap in August and September 2026 and are not added into one number. Apple Music, the biggest gap, is still to come.

Carlos Sadness and Little Jesus are my friend’s, from the account we shared in 2018 and 2019, so they are left out of every ranking. † Probably my mom’s: this account was connected to the home Alexas when I stayed at my parents’ house. A gap is a year the artist was outside my top ten; 2025 and 2026 are nearly empty because I had moved to Apple Music.

* In 2018 I shared the account with a friend, who listened to a lot of indie in Spanish. Their artists are left out of these lists, and some share of everything else that year is theirs too; I cannot split it.

Chapter 4

Now

Spotify stops being where I listen around 2024. The recent months come from Last.fm, which sees what plays on my Mac, until Apple Music can say the rest.

Chapter 5

How it was measured

Every number above had to be cleaned first, and each source sees a different part of me.

How the Spotify export was cleaned

236,479 rows in, 90,112 plays out. The rest were duplicates, podcasts and songs I abandoned within 30 seconds.

  1. Rows in the export23 yearly files, podcasts included.236,479
  2. Without duplicatesSpotify split busy years across files that overlap; the same stream at the same second counts once.231,276−5,203
  3. Music onlyPodcast episodes out.226,590−4,686
  4. Plays keptSpotify counts a stream from 30 seconds on. 60% of music starts ended sooner: skips.90,112−136,478

Times in the export are UTC. I counted them in Mexico City time, which moves 1,003 plays (1%) into another month and 105 into another year. A session is a run of starts with no pause over 30 minutes. Each play’s IP address, country, device model and exact time stay in a private folder on my Mac; the site gets only the totals.

Last.fm and Spotify overlap from August 2026 to September 2026: Spotify logged 25 plays then, 22 of them away from the Mac. That is the most Last.fm could have missed from Spotify, and far too few to size the gap; the Apple Music export will.

Totals only · script: aggregate-spotify-history

Source

Last.fm records what plays; a weekly script turns it into the top twenty songs, artists and albums for the month and the year. I listen on Apple Music, and a title links there when the exact match has been verified.

Genres are Apple Music’s: one per artist, looked up by hand for the artists on the top-twenty lists. Where Apple has no single artist to match, a namesake or a collaboration credit, the genre is my best guess, usually the lead artist’s. A new artist shows as not classified until it has one.

The Spotify years come from the export Spotify sends on request. I read it on my Mac and the site gets only totals: no single play, day, place or device model.

Why any of it mattered. Repetition is evidence of attention; the meaning is mine to add, and no script writes it for me.
